Radio 1 and Radio 1 Xtra DJ Charlie Sloth has plugged a Croydon rapper’s latest music video – could he follow in the footsteps of grime star Stormzy and rap duo Krept and Konan in flying the flag for the town on the international stage?
The popular DJ has shared Wholagun’s video for Better Place (Croydon) with his 410,000 Twitter followers on Monday (August 22).
Wholagun, who has been rapping since he was 14, has taken part in the Better Place series of music videos which was launche dby SBTV at the start of this year.
It provides musicians from different areas a platform to express their feelings about where they come from, with each artist singing or rapping over on the same instrumental that features the same vocals.
The music video follows Wholagun around his hometown and features many recognisable landmarks.
Back in 2010 he appeared on the same track, “All Starz”, as Thornton Heath grim star Stormzy.
It has been a very successful last 12 months for Stormzy who took home Best Male Act and Best Grime Act at the MOBO awards in November, a year after the BBC tipped him as one of 2015’s hottest artists.
Stormzy, real name Michael Omari, jumped the gun on the world’s biggest football transfer deal earlier this month – Paul Pogba’s £89m move from Juventus to Manchester United – by ‘accidentally’ posting a video revealing the switch on his Facebook page.
Krept and Konan, from Gypsy Hill and Thornton Heath, took home two of the biggest prizes at last year’s MOBO awards – Best Hip Hop Act and Best Album, for their major label debut The Long Way Home, which became of the the highest charting UK rap albums ever when it was released in July.
